Individual Session

Individual therapy, offered by a skilled psychotherapist, provides a nurturing environment for clients to embark on a journey of self-discovery and growth. While our goal as therapists is to guide you toward a reduction of symptoms or distress, it’s equally important that we help you engage more deeply with your emotions, foster stronger human connections, and practice self-compassion. Therapy isn’t just about bandaging a wound; it’s also about knowing ourselves at a deeper level. I hope that when you’re ready for therapy, this guide will provide you with the necessary insights for a successful experience. Welcome!

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY In-depth

What Is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy, as the name suggests, is a one-on-one, personalized mental health treatment tailored to meet your unique needs and goals. Our modern concept of therapy began with the early years of psychoanalytic therapy, made famous by the likes of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. In layman’s terms, individual therapy is a guided conversation between two people, leading to deep exploration of emotions, thoughts, beliefs, and psyche. Individual therapy involves many things such as: building a therapeutic relationship, exploration of your current mental and physiological state, assessing your needs, setting therapeutic goals, processing past experiences, understanding and accepting your emotions/feelings, and managing symptoms or triggers; all of which can help you live a healthier and happier life. Typically, it involves weekly sessions between a client and a psychotherapist, in a private, safe, and confidential setting. Individual therapy is also known as “talk therapy” or “counselling” or “psychotherapy”.

Types of Therapy in Individual Sessions:

Individual therapy doesn’t adhere to a single method. The American Psychological Association (APA) identifies key psychotherapy approaches:

    • Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Therapy
    • Cognitive Therapy
    • Behavior Therapy
    • Humanistic Therapy
    • Integrative or Holistic Therapy

There are more, but these are some common ones. Therapists often blend these modalities to suit each client’s needs. This is often how I approach therapy. I am trained in the above methods, but treat each client as a unique individual. Most importantly, research shows that the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is the largest agent of change. I really value this relationship, and I put much of my energy into cultivating this with you.

Other Terms for Individual Therapy:

Individual therapy is also commonly referred to as “psychotherapy” “counselling” or “talk therapy.” It’s a process of alleviating mental and personal challenges through meaningful conversation. The theory is, when you talk about the problems that you face you process the emotions and feelings associated with that. Think of it like a pressure cooker. You can only hold it in so long, so people need a way to ‘vent’ their thoughts and reprocess their emotions.

The Unique Role of a Therapist:

Why choose a therapist over simply confiding in friends or family? Therapists are expertly trained in the field and bring with them:

  • Empathy without being overwhelmed, dismissive, or judgemental
  • Unconditional positive regard
  • Unbiased and objective observations
  • Insights into your blind spots, unlike friends who may offer comfort but not challenges to your beliefs
  • Identification of your inner strengths and deeper struggles
  • Training in skills and strategies that treat mental health conditions
  • Expertise in bringing you ‘deeper’ into yourself, your thoughts, and your subconscious

Therapy vs. Self-help:

While self-improvement strategies are certainly valuable, therapy’s magic lies in the human connection, often unlocking answers that books, websites, and podcasts can’t. Therapy is another ‘tool’ for your toolbelt that can drastically improve your health and wellness. A benefit of therapy is that it allows you to fully focus on yourself for a dedicated hour, without distraction and with a therapist that is there to keep you aligned and on track. Using therapy, in conjunction with personal work and other self-help strategies, is a great way to feel better in your life!

Focus Areas in Individual Therapy:

Therapy concentrates on personal goals, such as improving self-esteem, breaking harmful cycles, managing depression or anxiety, handling stress, or finding one’s purpose. As a therapist, I typically focus on: holistically exploring various aspects of your life, your thoughts and beliefs, past experiences, your strengths and desires, traumatic experiences, body sensations, values, and more. Therapy often requires practice, patience, and time. Therapy can last weeks, months, or years depending on the client and their needs.

Characteristics of Individual Counselling:

Therapy can include various approaches like cognitive, behavioral, attachment-based, trauma-informed, integrative, experiential etc., depending on the condition, therapist’s specialization, and client’s personality. Successful therapy is flexible, integrating different methods as needed. In my practice, I am trained in top, evidence-based modalities, while knowing that one size does not fit all. Each individual is unique, and treatment plan adapts based on the client and our relationship. One important piece of therapy is that it is highly collaborative. You are a part of the process, just as much as the therapist is! Your goals, wants, and needs drive the overall direction of therapy.

Types of Psychotherapy:

Psychotherapy encompasses a wide range of modalities, including but not limited to:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
  • Psychoanalytic Therapy
  • Attachment-Based Therapies
  • Mindfulness-Based Therapies
  • Strengths-Based Therapies
  • Trauma-Informed Therapies
  • Experiential Therapies

As a therapist, I integrate elements of all of these, but lean heavily towards attachment-based, emotionally focused, and experiential methods. Attachment-based therapy is the understanding that our past, and early experiences in life, shape our beliefs, values, and sense of self throughout adult life. I also use experiential methods in individual therapy, and explore elements of spirituality in session.

Benefits of Individual Therapy:

There are many! Firstly, therapy can help you in accepting that your feelings and emotions are valid. Therapy helps to normalize what you may be going through, and can connect you to a shared human experience. Also, the more we talk about ourselves in a safe setting, the more we feel safe to do so! It is practice and repetition. Therapy can further empower you to recognize and make good life choices, break old patterns of thinking and behaviour, foster personal growth, grow spiritually, improve your relationships, and ultimately point you towards purpose and a more meaningful life. Therapy can teach you tangible skills to help keep your negative thoughts in check, regulate your body, and promote new, healthy behavioural patterns. You will hopefully leave therapy with a deeper understanding of yourself, allowing you to see the future more clearly and with a newfound hope for your life.

Counselling's Broader Impact:

Improvements in individual mental health can positively influence groups and communities. We are all a part of ‘community’, and a healthier, happier you is a force to be reckoned with in the world! Counselling benefits not just individuals, but also society as a whole by fostering shared self-awareness, resilience, a ‘collective unconscious’, and the normalization of mental health struggles. One of the best things we can do for the betterment of society is to turn inwards to find peace and happiness within first.

Are there other ‘types’ of therapy?

At IRG Psychotherapy I also work with couples and families. Each of these have their own benefits, but differ from individual. Couples and Family Therapy often focus on the processes that dictate and determine how a relationship or family operates. There is less attention spent on personal goals, and more on how couples and families can work better together. There are times when a client may be involved in individual therapy, and couples/family work at the same time. I encourage anyone seeking couples or family therapy to reach out with any questions.

Individual Therapy FAQ's

Therapy is not just for those in crisis or who are struggling. It’s a resource for anyone dealing with life’s challenges, big or small. It’s about self-care and seeking a space for open, honest conversation. If you’re wondering if therapy is right for you, I encourage you to try a consultation call with me (or any therapist, really!), to determine if there is a fit.
Success in therapy requires honesty and openness with your therapist. Feedback and communication are key to developing a strong therapeutic relationship. Collaboration is also hugely important. It is your life, and you decide what you need in therapy. Commitment is another pillar of good therapy, as nothing can change in your life if you aren’t committed to that change yourself. Finally, patience and resilience are important as change doesn’t happen overnight. It requires time, and it requires a belief that hard work will pay off. Trust me, it does! If you commit to your personal growth you will see it come to fruition in time.
Choosing a therapist involves considering factors like comfort level, specialization, availability, amongst others. Ultimately, it’s about feeling a connection and trust with your therapist. This is the most important thing. I tell all my clients: “let’s start with a few sessions and assess fit”… if you feel there isn’t a fit, no problem! I will gladly offer referrals in those cases, as I firmly believe you need to find someone you ‘click’ with. Check out my ‘About’ page to learn more about my style of therapy.
